The Cayman Islands government has won the prestigious 2021 People Management Award from the UK-based Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
During the CIPD gala evening, Tuesday 28 September in England, the CIG was awarded as Human Team of the Year – Public Sector, winning the title among a field of seven finalists in this category. Other shortlisted entities in the category included the National Health Service Blood and Transplant and the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
The Public Service Portfolio (PoCS) nominated for the awards, citing the range of initiatives it has undertaken, as a team of people, to help the public service and the country deal with the various challenges. of 2020, the largest being the COVID-19 emergency.
Its efforts included supporting the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) as the scale of the COVID-19 threat increased. There was a need for the portfolio to re-prioritize HR work and align with NEOC to provide support and take active roles. These ranged from helping with the organization of Operation Take Them Home (to bring government sponsored students and other citizens back to the islands when airports were closed) and management of the use of isolation facilities, in pursuit of business continuity. The latter included the publication of more than a dozen new HR policies, such as remote and flexible working arrangements, for various areas of the company.
PoCS also redeployed staff across the IGC, organized the management of the quarantine facilities, and managed the field hospital construction project. These were achieved while coordinating and executing staff information and wellness initiatives, continuing professional development programs, and staff support to the community, among other projects.
Commenting on Cayman’s entry, one of the judges noted, “These examples of operational excellence really blew us away. Overall, we felt this really set an example of an HR team meeting and succeeding above all expectations. “
Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson said: “I am delighted that our public service is once again recognized internationally for its work. This award recognizes our world-class reputation and the exceptional work the Public Service Portfolio team has done, under grueling circumstances. I say ‘thank you’ to them and the rest of the public service who have supported them for the work they did last year and for what they continue to do.
PoCS CEO Gloria McField-Nixon said: “In 2020, the entire HR team had one goal: to support the country by doing whatever it takes to keep our residents safe. A lot of the things they did weren’t typical HR tasks, but I’m so proud of the team’s passion, integrity and professionalism. These qualities shone in supporting our public service mission to improve the lives of those we serve. “
She added: “We are very happy that the PoCS team and the CIG have been recognized in this way. We are fortunate to work with so many accomplished professionals who are passionate about the success of the Cayman Islands and its people. Leaders have emerged from all levels of the HR profession and many of the innovations that were launched are still in place today!
The CIPD People Management Awards are presented annually to honor outstanding work in the field of human resources in various categories. The organizers said of the 2021 nominations: “Some really amazing projects were submitted this year and deserved to be celebrated! “
